Two Epik customers say the company tried to retain their business by offering free renewals.

On Twitter, marketer Adam Yamada said Epik called him after he entered orders to transfer his domains to another registrar. Epik offered him free one-year renewals in an effort to get him to stay.

Another Epik customer said he was offered the same deal. Both Yamada and the other customer declined the offer.

One big hurdle for Epik is that customers don’t know who owns the company now. Yamada wrote about his interaction with an Epik customer service rep:

Epik is now owned by some rich rancher out in Wyoming.

He wants to remain anonymous.

I informed him that’s not how ICANN policy works.

It’s not so much an ICANN policy issue as a customer trust issue. Obviously, the previous owners lost the trust of customers. That’s what happens when you owe customers lots of money and don’t renew their domains on time. The only way to win that trust back is to be transparent. And so far, there doesn’t seem to be any transparency.
